| Because a modified instrumentation with substantially greater measuring dynamics and a very low initial
value was required for the flow rate measurement of steam in the power station of a South German commercial vehicle
manufacturer, vortex flow sensors with integrated temperature sensor manufactured by Höntzsch Instruments/Waiblingen
were used. They replace the Delta-p system in the low-pressure steam piping of the power station used hitherto.
The Höntzsch vortex sensors are closed systems without moving mechanical parts and without apertures, which would
facilitate the infiltration of impurities. Therefore this sensor system is not subject to abrasion and the operational and
maintenance rates are kept low. In this way the operational reliability of the system is optimized and continuous,
trouble free running is guaranteed. Assembly time is very short and cost-effective, as the sensors are to be mounted one-sided without
counter-anchor even with large nominal diameters or chimneys. A further advantage is the extension potential of the
sensors in the case of greater nominal diameters, so that even in cramped assembly conditions easy installation is made possible.
The flexible, compact vortex measuring system has superb functionality. It stands out due to its high measuring dynamics of 1:160
and the initial value of the flow velocity lies at 0.5 m/s. In addition, operating temperatures of 240 °C and system pressure
of up to 3 bar are permissible. Furthermore, as a result of the excellent repeatability, long-term stability and the great choice
of materials a great availability is achieved.
For the analysis of the sensor signals in the power station of the commercial vehicle manufacturer, system electronics with
software for the display of the standard volume flow and mass flow were installed. All relevant data - as for example the
standard density - can be entered by means of the keypad integrated in the display unit for further calculation and call-in to
the display. For further processing both the analog output as well as the RS232 outputs are available. For use in potentially
explosive atmospheres the vortex sensors are available, also in conformity with the ATEX 94/9/EG Directive. |
